Library of Congress Scholarship Scheme

Enhance your research with up to six months of study at the largest library in the world.

The Library of Congress Scholarship is a prestigious scheme run jointly between the AHRC and the ESRC. The scheme offers the chance for AHRC/ESRC funded doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and research assistants to access the internationally renowned research collection at the Library of Congress.

The scheme is not limited to those researching American studies. With more than 142 million items on 650 miles of bookshelves and 10,000 new items added each day, you are sure to find material relevant to your research. Previous successful applicants have researched topics as diverse as: The Roman Empire; The Conservative Party and the Extreme Right; Investments and Human Rights; African-American Intellectual; The Highland military in the British Atlantic World and Exploring of Physicality and Virtuosity in the Concertos of Kaija Saariaho and Magnus Lindberg.

The successful applicants will receive a stipend towards their flight costs and a monthly allowance in addition to their normal monthly stipend paid as part of their award holder funding.

UK/EU Postgraduate Adult Returner Scholarship

The University is offering six bursaries intended to assist with child-care costs to UK and EU students who are returning to Higher Education study at the University of Edinburgh after a break of at least 3 years.

The bursaries will have a maximum value of £3,000 per annum. Bursaries will be awarded for one year in the first instance, however successful applicants pursuing a postgraduate degree programme of more than one year in length will be eligible to apply for a further bursary in subsequent years.

Eligibility The bursaries will be awarded to mature UK/EU citizens who are returning to higher education after at least three years away from university. Applicants should already have been offered a full-time postgraduate place at the University of Edinburgh (in any study discipline) and should have firmly accepted that offer.

The bursary will be available to help towards the cost of registered or formal childcare, particularly assisting single parents. Formal childcare includes childminders, after school clubs and providers of day-care and education.

  • Abbey National plc - Santander Universities scholarships for Iberian and Latin American students interested in completing a master's degree at the University of Southampton.
  • Africa Education Trust provides a number of scholarships, grants and emergency funds to students from Africa studying in administration, education, science & technology
  • Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme. The Aga Khan Foundation is a non-denominational development agency and can provide a number of scholarships for postgraduate study (mainly Masters though PhD considered) to students from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar, Mozambique, Syria, France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada
  • The Anglo-Jewish Association offers grants up to £500 for non-British Jewish students who could not otherwise afford to enter university
  • Arab-British Chamber Charitable Foundation Scholarships offers partial funding for postgraduate study to citizens of Algeria, Comoro Islands, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and The Yemen. There is no website so send an email
  • Becas Chile for Chilean students interested in studying postgraduate programmes in the UK, as well as some exchange schemes with partner institutions. The University of Southampton, as member of the Russell Group, has an agreement with Becas Chile.
  • Beit Trust Scholarships support students from Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe in studying one-year taught Masters programme
  • Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarships are for US undergraduate students seeking to undertake a study abroad programme
  • The British Federation of Women Graduates offer scholarships to women studying in final year of their PhD in the UK
  • Canada Student Loans Programme offers loans and grants to Canadian nationals who can demonstrate a financial need
  • Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund awards annual awards ranging from £500 to £2000 to students who are currently enrolled within a UK university on a postgraduate programme. Though administered by the Canadian Women's Club the awards are open to both genders
  • Cannon Colins Scholarship Programme offers funds to students from Southern African countries undertaking a one year taught masters in the UK
  • Chevening scholarships are funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, administered by the British Council, available in some 150 countries and nearly 2,300 are available each year
  • Chevening - University of Southampton scholarships for Russian students offer funds to complete a Master's programme at the University of Southampton. The deadline for applications for 2009 entry was 10 October 2008.
  • China Scholarship Council sponsors some 3000 Chinese students annually to undertake studies abroad
  • The Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan offers a number of opportunities for funding study in the UK
  • Commonwealth Scholarships Plan offers postgraduate scholarships to Canadian nationals
  • CONACyT (Demanda libre) offers scholarships to Mexican students wishing to study a Masters or PhD in the UK in science, technology, humanities or social sciences
  • CONACyT (Southampton) offers reductions in tuition fees to Mexican students wishing to study at the University of Southampton in the areas supported by Conacyt. Applications should be made through Conacyt.
  • Croucher Foundation Grants are intended to enable permanent residents of Hong Kong to engage in research work in Natural Science, Medicine or Technology overseas
  • Debswana Scholarship Programme is a full scholarship for students from Botswana. It is open to 'future Debswna employees' as well as current ones. It is available for various levels of study
  • Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards support outstanding students from India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the developing world to study a PhD in top rated UK research facilities.
  • EPSRC Grants. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council provide some funding to individuals and institutions undertaking research in asscoiated areas. The application is forwarded by the educational institution and not the student
  • ESRC is the Economic and Social Research Council. They provide funding for research in related areas. Students must be UK/EU residents in order to be eligible.
  • Federal Student Aid (Stafford) Loans can help support US students to study overseas
  • FIDERH offers loans for Mexican students to study masters, PhDs, and post-doctoral studies in engineering, technology, social sciences, economics, education, humanities, health sciences and natural sciences
  • Fullbright Postgraduate Student Awards and Scholarships provide tuition and maintenance for US citizens for the first year of their postgraduate studies
  • Fundacion Bancomer BBVA-British Council offers 1 scholarship for a Mexican student to study a Masters in contemporary art curation, and art criticism
  • FUNED offers loans to Mexican students wishing to study a Masters in the UK. An agreement with Southampton offers reduced fees for Masters courses in economics, international relations, law, finance, engineering (maritime and aerodynamics), social statistics, sociology, social policy and MBAs
  • GI Bill Benefit Programmes for educational development of US veterans
  • Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund has some resource available to assist Sudanese students with their studies in the UK
  • Great Britain - China Educational Trust Grants offer awards for study of up to 2500 for Chinese nationals to study in the UK
  • International Federation of University Women offers funding for women who are members of the federation and are undetaking advanced research, study and training
  • Hong Kong Scholarships for Excellence scheme is currently open for applications for the 2008/2009 academic year. It offers funding to undergraduate students from England to study in higher education institutions in Hong Kong.
  • Karin Rida Said Foundation Scholarships offer funding opportunities to Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian students for postgraduate study in the UK
  • King Faisal Foundation Scholarships are offered to outstanding Muslim students of any nationality for study in prestigious universities in the West
  • Lanekassen is the Norwegian student loans and grants awarding body and will support Norwegian students to study overseas
  • Magdalena O Vda de Brockmann offers scholarships for Mexican students to study a Masters in the UK in all areas except management
  • Marshall Scholarships are open only to US students wishing to study in the UK.
  • Mexican Embassy - website provides information on scholarships open to Mexican students including scholaraships offerred by SEP, Mexican Academy of Science, Royal Society and Wellcome Trust.
  • Newby Trust provides bursaries to students with a proven track record of UK education whose financial circumstances have been affected by circumstances beyond their control
  • Promep offers scholarships for Mexican, full-time teachers at state Universities in Mexico
  • Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for some 1200 students to study abroad each year
  • Stobie-SALT-University of Southampton Scholarship in Astronomy / Astrophysics is offered through a partnership between the South African National Research Foundation and University of Southampton. It provides support for South African students to undertake PhD level studies in Astronomy or Astrophysics at the University of Southampton
  • UK-China Scholarships for Excellence offers funding to UK and Chinese PhD students and post doctoral researchers in both countries.
  • UNESCO fellowships are available for specialised postgraduate training courses of a maximum of six months in duration
  • Wellcome Trust fellowships are open to nationals or legal residents of a 'developing country'.

[Worldwide] International Master in Tourism & Leisure

The School and companies network fund scholarships awarded as a partial exemption from Master tuition fee.

Scholarships are awarded based on merit and on specific requirements indicated by the company funding the scholarship.

To apply for scholarships, candidates must:

* Complete and send the application on-line to the International Master in Tourism & Leisure
* Meet the requirements stated in the scholarship description
* Send all relevant documentation indicated in the scholarship description

Admission to the International Master in Tourism & Leisure program is independent from the scholarship process.
When outcomes for admissions are announced, candidates will be informed if they receive a scholarship and the amount.

Travel Scholarships

The University annually offers up to ten Travel Scholarships, of a value not normally exceeding £400 each, for undergraduate students in the second year of their course. These awards are designed to assist students to travel, during the Easter or Long Vacation immediately following the receipt of the award. The journey should relate to the applicant's area of study, but at the same time should not represent an integral or required part of a particular course. Applications, which must include an indication of the specific purpose for which the award is sought, should be submitted to the Academic Registrar in accordance with the conditions described in the notices publicising the competition. These notices are usually made available in the Autumn term.

Additional grants, for travel to ancient sites, are offered annually from the Sheila Spire Fund. These awards are open to first- and second-year students, and are advertised alongside the Travelling Scholarships. Proposed projests need not relate to a student's course of study, but successful applicants must be able to demonstrate that the travel has a serious academic purpose.

Unitrin Career Agency Companies Scholarship

African American women planning to attend a historically black university or college can apply for the Unitrin Career Agency Companies Scholarship, sponsored in part by the United Negro College Fund. The annual scholarship is worth $5,000 to be used toward tuition and expenses at a historically black institute of higher learning. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and their legal guardian or parent must have an insurance policy with Mutual Savings, Union National, United or Reliable to qualify.

  • Jackie Robinson Foundation Grant

  • Named in honor of America's first African American major league baseball player, the Jackie Robinson Foundation awards college grants to deserving minority students every year. The foundation states its awards are designed to "mold (recipients) into dynamic leaders with a commitment to public service and Jackie Robinson's humanitarian ideals," and promises a "rigorous selection process" which involves essay questions and an interview. Grant winners can receive up to $7,500 to be used at any accredited college and are provided with transport and lodging for an annual Scholars Networking Weekend, which offers leadership workshops and internship assistance.
